The Avengers is a near perfect big summer blockbuster. This movie featured everything that I hoped it would include, epic action sequences, entertaining dialogue, humor, and most importantly lots of fun. Cabin in the Woods: Review
Cabin in the Woods is a film made for horror movie fans. It takes what is a generic setup that audiences have seen time and time again (Cabin Fever, The Evil Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th) and molds it into something new and fresh. Honestly I am not a big fan of the horror genre, (of course there are horror movies that I like) and I often wait until they hit home video before I see them. Due to the talent behind Cabin in the Woods and thanks to the very positive buzz surrounding the movie leading up to its release my interest was piqued, so I decided to check it out opening weekend. In this review I am going to do my best to stay away from the movie’s plot and story so that I don’t spoil the movie for anyone, as this is a film going experience that will benefit from knowing as little as possible going in. The Raid: Redemption – Review
If you are a fan of martial arts action movies you need to go see The Raid: Redemption. This Indonesian film is filled with fast paced brutal action set pieces that will have you on the edge of your seat, and the action rarely stops throughout the movies 101 minute run time. The last time I enjoyed a martial arts film this much was with 2003’s Ong Bak the Thai Warrior. Continue reading
The Hunger Games: Matt’s Review
While Dave has already posted his excellent review for The Hunger Games I figured that since I also saw the movie this weekend I would chime in with my own review. Unlike Dave I did not head to a midnight showing when the movie was released this week but instead waited until Saturday to make my way over to the theater to catch a matinee showing, and I was quite surprised to see a packed house for a morning showing. A quick science fiction film checklist
1. A lone human hero with the fate of a world in his hands – check
2. A beautiful princess in need of help – check
3. Strange alien creatures – check
4. A villain out to control the world – check
5. A whole lot of fun at the movie theater – check
John Carter features many of the traditional plot points and the typical scenarios that we have come to expect in a sci-fi adventure film that we have come to expect. Some may feel that John Carter is a rip-off of a variety of other science fiction films; however those people are probably unaware that it is based on a novel that was first published nearly 100 years ago. In fact A Princess of Mars, the book that this movie is based on has helped to inspire many of our favorite science fiction books and movies. Personally I found John Carter to be a very entertaining movie that featured good directing, acting, and believable special effects. Continue reading
Hugo Review
Since I was a little boy I have loved movies, it did not matter if I was watching them at the movie theater or at home on TV it was just something that connected with me. There are a few movies that I can look back on and remember how I felt while watching them, I can still remember the being awe struck while watching Jurassic Park, or Tim Burton’s Batman. Martin Scorsese’s new film Hugo was a movie that reminded me of those feelings as it displayed a love for cinemas ability to provide its audience with these experiences and feelings.
Act of Valor
As promised Bleed Geek: Movies is back with our second review, this time for the new action film Act of Valor. From the moment I saw the first trailer for this movie I became very interested in seeing Act of Valor because of the films main gimmick… that the major roles are played by actual active duty Navy SEALs. Safe House –
If you were to combine the Jason Bourne movies with the film Training Day the end result would probably something very similar to the new movie Safe House. Safe House has a lot in common with most modern CIA action films, even the way that the action was shot reminded me off the two Paul Greengrass directed Bourne movies (Supremacy and Ultimatum), though thankfully director Daniel Espinosa keeps his shaky cam from being overused or distracting. What really makes this film work is the interaction between Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, with strong supporting roles played by Brendan Gleeson, and Vera Farmiga as CIA higher-ups.
