Daily Geek Report 03-12-2012

Happy Monday. Hope you all were able to get out and enjoy this wonderful early spring!!!

Let’s get into it! It’ was reported this weekend that Google in 2011 paid over $1 Billion to Apple to be the default search engine in Safari. Google itself nets $335 million in revenue from all searches being done in Safari. Granted that’s not even close to making their money back.. Google needs to keep this hold. Apple could easily sell out to Bing or Yahoo. With the iPad gaining as much steam as it has been the last few years. This market hold is key to Google’s continued success.. What’s a search engine if people aren’t using it?

AT&T has announced that over the next few months they will be putting their 4G LTE Service out into 12 new cities just in time for your new iPads!! This is something that should have been done a year ago IMO. Here are the 12 lucky cities to be included this go round:

  • Naples, FL
  • Bloomington, IN
  • Lafayette, IN
  • Muncie, IN
  • Baton Rouge, LA
  • New Orleans, LA
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Akron, OH
  • Canton, OH
  • Cleveland, OH
  • Bryan-College Station, TX
  • NYC-Staten Island, NY

Yahoo today filed a suit against Facebook. It isn’t quite clear what the claims are for infringement quite yet. This is what Yahoo came out and said to the media:

Yahoo! has invested substantial resources in research and development through the years, which has resulted in numerous patented inventions of technology that other companies have licensed. These technologies are the foundation of our business that engages over 700 million monthly unique visitors and represent the spirit of innovation upon which Yahoo! is built. Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court. We are confident that we will prevail.

“Another brick in the wall”. Another log on the fire.. Hopefully with all these patent wars going on, it will drive lawmakers to revise what is currently an old and outdated system.

That’s it for today’s daily geek report. Have a great Monday everyone!
