Today is a good day for the Internet. The FCC actually seems to be doing the right thing. While it has been rumored for a couple days that on Thursday the FCC would be announcing that they plan to reclassify the Internet as a utility, today the FCC chairman Tom Wheeler wrote about his plan on Wired.
This is really the best outcome we can get. It isn’t all done yet because things never move that quickly in politics, but this is a very big step in the right direction. The Verge has been collecting responses to this announcement today, you may notice not everyone is happy. Big companies like Verizon and Comcast are going to try and tell you that this is not a good thing, they are going to try and appeal to your pocket book by telling you that it’s going to cost you more. This is not the case. Remember these are the same companies that throttle you when they see fit and use no logic behind their pricing for data as it is now. I am interested to see how news outlets spin this news as well, since most of the major ones are owned by these large providers that want you to think this is bad.
This isn’t the end, but it’s important to know that this is good for the Internet as a whole, and will be very good for the consumer. There will definitely be a lot more news on this in the days to come, but it is a very good start.
