Storm – App of the Week

There are a lot of weather apps out there. Some are good, most of them are not. I currently have eleven weather apps installed on my phone, although I have tried many more than that. Some show the radar in a way I like, while others seem like they are better at predicting when the rain will hit; they all do things just a little differently. For a long time I had stuck with Dark Sky. I loved the way it looked and that it focused on micro-forecasts. The micro-forecasting was my favorite part of Dark Sky, it shows the rain for the next hour, down to the minute. And then… I came across Storm.

Storm does a lot of things I really like. When you open it you see the radar as well as some smaller panels of information (current, hourly, and daily). You tap on the radar to get the prediction animations or you can pick one of the panels to get more info from each category. When you are in the hourly or daily panels you can choose to look at the info as a list or with trend lines. There is a lot of useful information in here and the lines are very well built. All of the weather information is powered by Weather Underground. You can get fairly customizable notifications about precipitation, lighting strikes, or your normal weather service warnings.

While I really like the set up of the app itself, I also really like the Today Widget they have built. It shows you a lot of information in a simple and efficient way. It doesn’t take up a ton of room but still gives you what you need to know. They made it so you don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what it is saying; a quick glance gives you everything you want to know. Other weather apps with Today Widgets take up a lot of space for a nice picture or get too wordy to just be able to glance at and get the gist.

Overall, for the last few weeks I have been using Storm it has pretty much taken over all of my weather needs. I am still not ready to let go of Dark Sky as it is still great for the next hour predictions and also has a simple Today widget. For now I am using them in tandem. Storm is free on the App Store, but is ad supported, they have $1.99 in-app purchase to get rid of ads for a year, not a bad price to pay all considered.

You can get Storm here on iOS.
You can get Dark Sky here as well.
