If you have ever been out to eat with a group of friends that don’t ever seem to carry cash then Venmo may be the app for you. The bill comes and you all just stare at each other, not knowing what to do next, maybe you could pay and everyone could give you their share the next time they see you and happen to have the elusive paper currency, or they could just pull out their phone and Venmo you the money on the spot.
Venmo offers an easy solution to the problem many of us have faced at some time, sending money to a friend. Venmo is easy to set up, simply link your card or you bank account and find your friends. Sending and receiving money is mostly free with debit cards and bank accounts, a 3% fee is assessed with credit card transactions. Once you add your friends it is simple to both send and request funds.
One of the other fun aspects of the app is the social feed that is always running. You can see a feed of what your friends have sent or requested, you can also see a global feed. Sometimes I find myself just watching the feed scroll by as people are asking for and paying for different things, it may be drinks and pizza, or it might be rent, a lot of time it is just emoji. A podcast called Reply All had an entire episode around the premise of watching this feed, it is well worth a listen.
While there have been many apps that have tried to conquer this space; Square, PayPal, and even Snapchat. Venmo’s social feed and ease of use could help it move into the forefront of this battle and help us all through those awkward moments when the bill comes.
