I had a different plan for this week’s Movie of the Week, but then I heard a stranger attempting to argue that Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. After overhearing this conversation I started to think about why Die Hard is often considered a Christmas a Movie, and I decided to change my plans and figured that this would be a great opportunity to share about one of my all time favorite movies.
I’ll get my opinion about this out there right away, Die Hard is not only one of the greatest action movies of all time, but it is also an excellent Christmas movie. It is not a Christmas movie because it takes place during the Christmas season (plenty of films take place around Christmas that I don’t consider Christmas movies, Lethal Weapon, and Iron Man 3 are two that immediately come to mind), Die Hard is a Christmas movie because the holiday plays a role in the film. If the movie were to take place at a different time of year it would change the whole feel of the film. Without the Christmas setting the music used in the film would be quite different, the films plot would to be altered, the set design would look nothing like it does in the film, and most importantly the plot would be drastically altered. Christmas is an essential element of Die Hard and without it the movie would be very different from the film that I love.
In my opinion Die Hard is one of those rare nearly perfect films. Everything in the movie just seems to fit together perfectly, the script, the cast, the directing, and the action. It is a movie that I can watch over and over again and it just doesn’t ever get old. If you or someone you care about have not yet experienced the joy of Die Hard now is the perfect time to do so.
